BAM Studio Art Classes
BAM’s studio art program encourages the creative abilities of all participants by offering experiences in a variety of art media which provide opportunities for making connections with BAM’s exhibitions. Through reputable artists and educators, we provide quality instruction for all ages in a small-class, non-competitive and enjoyable atmosphere. Class size is limited to optimize learning. Weekend Workshop: Drawing from the Collection

$45 ($60 non-members) Workshop fee includes all materials for use during class.
Pre-registration deadline: February 8, 2012
Work directly with a professional artist! Artist John Taye will lead participants through drawing exercises based on BAM’s Permanent Collection with emphasis on drawing from observation. Participants will have the opportunity to learn basic drawing techniques and experiment with new processes and materials. No prior drawing experience is necessary.
What is That? Tips for Talking About Art with Children

While students create art in BAM’s studios, parents will be offered tips, tools and prompts to engage their children in meaningful discussions about the artwork in the galleries. Students will then join their parents as they use their new conversation tools to explore BAM’s collection.

Afraid of art? Worried you might not 'get it'? Explore BAM’s collection and practice techniques for discussing art with others who share similar interests in a casual and fun environment. This “speed-dating” approach to art will help participants learn to visit museums, galleries and other visual arts events with confidence.

Experimenting with Watercolor: Advanced
Dates: Tuesdays, April 3, 10, 17, 24, 2012

Create both abstract and realistic paintings through this in-depth look at advanced watercolor painting techniques. Participants will discuss composition, materials and some color theory. Some drawing and painting experience is recommended. All levels are welcome.
Experimenting with Watercolor: Beginning

Explore the basics of painting with watercolor. After discussing works of art in the Museum, participants will spend time in the studios experimenting with basic color mixing, blending and surface and texture effects. No prior drawing or painting experience is necessary.

Explore brush painting as a form of artistic expression in Asian cultures in conjunction with the exhibition Eastern Traditions, Western Expressions. Families will walk through the exhibition, exploring Chinese and Japanese brush paintings and calligraphy. Working together in the studios, families will paint delicate and expressive lines with sumi ink and rice paper to combine old and new painting techniques.

High School Portfolio Review

High School students are invited to gather and open their portfolios to representatives from art and design colleges of the Northwest. This is a unique opportunity for high school artists to receive individual feedback about their work from professional reviewers. No RSVP required, but wait time varies. Plan to stay at least 2 hours.

ART CLASSES for Children
BAM’s studio art program encourages the creative ability of all participants by facilitating experiences in a variety of arts media and making connections with original works of art in BAM’s exhibitions. Through reputable artists and educators, we provide quality instruction for all ages in a small-class, non-competitive and enjoyable atmosphere. All classes are limited to 12-15 students. Students are divided by age to provide individualized instruction and attention. Children are required to be checked in and out of classes and camps at BAM by a parent or guardian each day.

ART CAMPS for Children
Add excitement to your child’s Spring Break with this fun-filled week of art experiences. The camp is limited to 20 students for individualized attention and safety. Students should dress for messy and outdoor activities and wear comfortable shoes for walking. Bring a sack lunch, drink, sunscreen, hat and water bottle each day. A Medical Information Card for each student will be mailed when the registration form is received. The student may attend only after the form has been completed, signed and returned to BAM. Children are required to be checked in and out of classes and camps at BAM by a parent or guardian each day.

Take an imaginary journey across the Pacific! Discover artwork from Asian cultures such as China, Japan and Korea in the exhibition Eastern Traditions, Western Expressions. Explore bold landscapes, make delicate brush paintings, create handmade paper, build ceramic vessels and other Asian-inspired works of art. Participants in this camp will have the opportunity to experiment with authentic materials such as sumi ink, rice paper and clay all week long.
