IN THE MUSEUM
NO TOUCHING: The Museum must protect and preserve art for the future. The oils that keep your hands smooth and soft can damage an artwork, even if you think you’re touching carefully. If lots of people touch a work of art, even gently, the oils from their hands will discolor or destroy the surface of the artwork, and eventually it will wear down or break. Use your eyes to tell if something is smooth or rough, shiny or dull, etc.
KEEP YOUR DISTANCE: A distance of at least twelve inches between students and a piece of art is required. Leaning on cases and walls is not permitted.
NOISE LEVEL: We don’t expect the students to be silent. We do expect them to be respectful of others in the galleries and use appropriate “indoor” voices.
SEATING: Sitting on the gallery floors for group discussions allows all group members to see the artwork and to participate in the conversations. This also encourages the group to stay together and stay focused. Lying on the floor is not allowed as it limits student participation and causes difficulty for other visitors in the galleries.
DISCIPLINE: Discipline is everyone’s responsibility. We expect you to help your group members understand their responsibility for their own behavior. Stress that your group use inside behavior and save running and jumping for outside in the park.
CHAPERONS: One adult chaperon per ten students is required. Chaperons are responsible for supervising their group and making sure they follow the museum rules. Chaperons must accompany their groups at all times while they are touring the museum. Chaperons have a serious responsibility so we ask them not to bring infants and younger children with them as this diverts their attention from the group.
WRITING AND DRAWING: Pens are NOT allowed in the Museum. If your students are taking notes or sketching with pencils during their visit, please make sure they have something to write on such as sketch pads, notebooks or clipboards. Leaning on cases and walls is not permitted.
OTHER TOUR GROUPS: There may be other self-guided tours running concurrently with yours. Please be respectful of other groups who have also pre-scheduled their tours.
THE MUSEUM STORE
Under the supervision of teachers and chaperons, students are invited - in groups of five (5) or less - to visit THE MUSEUM STORE.
The store offers educational, art-focused merchandise to extend the museum experience. Items for sale include art-related toys, pencils, paints, books and craft kits.
Please keep your group together and under control. If your group or members of your group behave inappropriately or negatively impact other visitors, your group will be asked to leave.
